Wishing everyone a safe and happy holiday week! Its been cold, dark and rainy here in Seattle but at least no snow or ice on the roads. All activities mentioned below can easily be done at home, which probably goes to show how much of a homebody I’ve become this winter… lets hope that changes once spring come around!
FOOD: White Kimchi (recipe here)
After making a batch of traditional spicy kimchi and finishing it in an entire week (a record, even for me), I decided to make a variation of my beloved kimchi this week. While I’ve always been a fan of spicy food, I feel as if my stomach has grown less tolerant of extreme spiciness as of late and that I should experiment and take it a bit easier on the poor ole stomach, if only just for my comfort. 48 hours of fermentation in room temperature was just perfect – now lets hope they last me more than a week this time.
FITNESS: Cardio & yoga
I was on a yoga kick for the past two weeks and almost completely threw out the notion of the necessity of cardio. However, life is all about balance and to keep fitness interesting it’s integral to have variety. As I’m already a fan of yoga and running, I decided to try something new and workout to a 15-minute high-intensity kickboxing workout routine. I particularly enjoyed this brief intro to kickboxing as I know nothing of that activity so the workout was even more challenging for me to get accustomed to the moves and rhythm. But this sort of novelty is critical to keeping oneself engaged with fitness, and I will definitely be on the lookout for other similarly time-efficient cardio workouts. So grateful for the universal accessibility of workout videos on YouTube as of late!
MUSIC: Christmas songs!
I actually really enjoy Christmas music – a touch nostalgic, hopeful and perfect to get you in the holiday mood. Really enjoyed the heartfelt Christmas-themed A Very Murray Christmas special on Netflix, which I highly recommend if you too are feeling a touch nostalgic this holiday season. A strong cast breaking out into song can only help to elevate your mood. I never knew Murray was such a singer and I thought Miley Cyrus delivered wonderfully strong, enviable vocals. My personal favorite Christmas songs, would have to be (my Christmas anthem) Jingle Bell Rock, Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree (is it possible to NOT think of Home Alone when you hear this?) and Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. Don’t think I could possibly ever get sick of this trio.
TV SHOW: The Office
Just finished a major binge watch on Netflix of one of my favorite TV shows of all time, The Office. Yes, all entire nine seasons! Full of slapstick humor, I gathered a newfound appreciation for the last two seasons of The Office which many criticized as having gone downhill after one of the show’s major characters, Steve Carrell, left in Season 7. Now I wasn’t always a fan of the show – lacking a glamorous cast, and humor I didn’t “get,” I was once a pretty harsh critic of the show but that all changed after I got accustomed to the dialogue and learned to understand the humor in the uniquely hilarious dialogue. Now I’m a lifelong fan and I only hope others find the simple yet humorous moments in this show that depicts the ordinary yet comical comings and goings of employees at a paper company in Scranton, PA. It’s a fantastic mood lifter, especially necessary in these cold and rainy Seattle winter days.
